On Aug. 21st during the Great American Solar Eclipse, the students of Earth to Sky Calculus launched 11 space weather balloons from the path of totality. They aimed to photograph the Moon's shadow from the stratosphere--and they succeeded. This GoPro video recorded more than 100,000 feet above Earth's surface shows the inky-black shadow of the Moon darkening a 70-mile-wide patch of Wyoming and Nebraska.

On August 2, 2018, art met science 101,534 feet above Earth's surface. The students of Earth to Sky Calculus flew a cosmic ray balloon to the stratosphere, and this crystal globe went along for the ride. The young scientists wanted to see what Earth looked like when viewed through the spherical lens ... of Earth. Answer: very cool.

On May 28, 2018, a group of AP Biology students from Bishop Union High School launched a robot for aerobiology research in the stratosphere. The robot they designed can carry vials of biosamples to the stratosphere. For most of the flight, the samples are contained inside a light-tight box. At a pre-programmed altitude, the robot brings the samples out for exposure to extreme ultraviolet rays inside the ozone layer. This first test flight was a success. Ultimately, the students hope to use it to study the reaction of yeast to the Mars-like conditions in Earth's upper atmosphere.

It's the spookiest space weather balloon mission ever! On Oct. 22, 2017, the students of Earth to Sky Calculus launched a pumpkin to the edge of space. The Jack O'Lantern flew to a record-setting altitude of 107,284 feet before parachuting back to Earth, landing on the verge of Death Valley National Park.
